Applies to:Youth-owned businesses (18-35) • Young startups • Youth cooperatives

Young South African entrepreneurs (aged 18-35) have access to dedicated funding programmes with preferential terms including grants, reduced interest rates, and lower equity requirements. This guide covers all major youth-focused funding pathways to help you find the right support for your business.

Youth Advantage: Youth programmes often offer 30-50% better terms than standard funding – lower rates, reduced equity requirements, and grant components. Always check youth eligibility first.

Age & Ownership Requirements

Standard Youth Definition

  • Age Range: 18-35 years old
  • Ownership: Varies by programme – NYDA grants require 100% youth ownership, while IDC Gro-E accepts 26%+ (best rates above 50%)
  • Management: Active involvement by youth owners

Documentation Needed

  • Certified copy of ID (showing date of birth)
  • Shareholding certificate or membership register
  • Company registration showing directors

Age Calculation

Age is typically calculated at the date of application. Some programmes allow you to remain in the programme if you turn 36 during the funding period.
